Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen in the January transfer window, according to Sport (via SportWitness).
United Weigh Goalkeeping Reinforcements
The Red Devils have already made moves to strengthen their goalkeeping department this season. After being linked with several options over the summer, they eventually signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day, while André Onana was loaned out to Trabzonspor for the rest of the campaign.
Lammens impressed in his debut against Sunderland last weekend, keeping a clean sheet and showcasing strong reflexes. However, his promising start hasn’t silenced rumours that United may still be in the market for an experienced keeper. Reports suggest that contact has been made with Barcelona over a potential loan deal with an option to buy for ter Stegen in January.
Barcelona Open to Exit — If Ter Stegen Pushes
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, ter Stegen knows consistent playing time will be crucial to securing his place in Germany’s squad. Barcelona are said to be open to sanctioning his departure, but only if the 33-year-old requests a move mid-season.
Financial Hurdles Could Block the Move
Despite United’s reported interest, a deal appears unlikely at this stage. The club were previously keen on Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, but pulled out due to his wage demands and transfer fee. Similar financial concerns could apply to ter Stegen, who currently earns around £276,000 per week—a figure well above United’s preferred wage structure.
Adding to the uncertainty, ter Stegen is still recovering from a back injury and isn’t expected to return until November, raising doubts about his form and fitness heading into the second half of the season.
For now, United are expected to monitor Lammens’ progress closely before making any major goalkeeping moves in January.
