Paul Scholes: Amorim urged to make bold tweak to get Bruno Fernandes firing again – Man United News And Transfer News

Ruben Amorim has so far failed to get the best out of Manchester United’s midfield.

Some argue INEOS let the Portuguese tactician down by not landing the athletic midfielder he craved.

But Amorim has not helped himself either; his midfield selections have raised eyebrows.

The notion has been that, with the options available, Amorim needed to find the ideal partner for Bruno Fernandes.

However, what if the issue is not even about finding Fernandes a partner, what if the problem is Fernandes himself, and the fact that the 31-year-old is not suited to a central midfield role?

Scholes: play Fernandes where he does the damage

While many have tiptoed around the idea that Fernandes in central midfield is not working, Paul Scholes has not.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the United legend sent a clear message to Amorim:

“He is the most creative player on the team; he should be playing as the No. 10, there is no doubt about that.

“But he is being asked to do something different. It’s normal for a No. 10 like him to fill in for two or three games when someone’s injured or suspended. But then you get bored of constantly dropping back to defend.”

    Why it is not working

Having experienced a similar positional shift himself, Scholes explained why the transition from No 10 to central midfield can be problematic:

“Defending was never my strong point. I didn’t enjoy having to think about it. As a No. 10, you’re focused on getting your team to play, creating chances, scoring goals.”

Fernandes may offer value as a deep-lying playmaker, but his defensive shortcomings are costing United.

Of the seven goals they have conceded, Fernandes has been directly at fault for two when he has failed to track his runners.

Against Fulham, his lapse allowed Emile Smith Rowe to score the equaliser in a 1-1 draw. Then against City, he failed to follow Phil Foden’s run, giving the No 47 space to break the deadlock in that 3-0 derby defeat.

Fernandes in central midfield is a defensive liability. He needs to be restored to the No. 10 role, where he can do real damage.

    Fernandes is not happy either

Scholes’ comments come just as Chris Wheeler reveals Fernandes himself is unhappy with the central midfield role.

Amorim, stubborn as he may be, must heed the calls to return Fernandes to his natural position. It could be the tactical shift United need to rediscover their edge.

With Bruno as a number 10 option, he could rotate with new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Amorim can then deploy a more defensive midfield pivot, one that shores up United’s back line, until INEOS finally delivers the midfielder he wants.

“Everyone has to look at themselves”: Bruno Fernandes demands accountability after Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has demanded accountability, insisting that he and his teammates have to look in the mirror following the Europa League final heartbreak vs. Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for a trophy as Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal proved enough to beat United in the European final at San Mames.

The Red Devils looked lifeless and uninspired – a puzzling display given their repeated pre-match claims of wanting to win the competition for the fans.

Even Fernandes, who has been one of the very few positives this term, endured a difficult game and he was not as influential as he usually is.

After the final whistle, the dejected Portuguese playmaker spoke to Hayters and gave his verdict on the game as well as what has been a truly calamitous campaign.

Fernandes said, “First of all, we need to look at what we did this season, everything that went wrong in every in every point, in every department, in every moment of the season.”

“Everyone has to look at themselves. I need to be the first one to look at myself, understand what I can do more to help the club to to become the club we were in the past.”

“I want, as everyone in that dressing room, wants to bring the club back where they deserve. And obviously it is a very disappointing day, because we couldn’t get a trophy for this club to try to make something positive from from a disappointing season.”

“But obviously, we need to look at ourselves, understand whatever each one of us can do to help the team to become better.”

Fernandes explained that even winning the Europa League would not have saved United’s season.

“It doesn’t change anything. Our season was bad, and it won’t change by the fact that we lost today. Obviously, winning today will give a little bit of of something bright, of something positive to the season, but won’t change that our season was very negative.”

“We had a very good competition until here, but obviously that is in the past, and unfortunately we know we’re not the winners and we’re not not going to be remembered for that.”

“So I think it’s very disappointing, a very difficult day for us. It was a competition where we had a big ambitions, but unfortunately, it wasn’t our day.”

Head coach Ruben Amorim will lead his side into Sunday’s final Premier League clash against Aston Villa with major doubts looming over his ability to turn things around at the club, following what has been United’s worst season since they were relegated in 1973/74.

Man United legend Wayne Rooney hits out at Ruben Amorim over Bruno Fernandes’ role – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has questioned Ruben Amorim’s use of Bruno Fernandes.

Despite United’s struggles in the Premier League, Fernandes has been outstanding this season – arguably playing the best football of his career – and has clearly adapted well to life under Amorim.

Fernandes has notched an impressive 19 goals and 18 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Amorim has primarily utilised the skipper in a midfield pivot, but he has also impressed when deployed in one of the two No. 10 roles.

When operating in a deeper role, Fernandes has been instrumental in helping United break the lines and progress up the pitch, while in the No. 10 position, he’s consistently showcased his creativity and vision in the final third.

It remains to be seen in which position his long-term future lies but Rooney feels the Portugal international is less effective when playing deeper.

Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney explained that it isn’t right that defensive-minded players are sometimes allowed to be more involved in attacking play than Fernandes.

“The game now is very much positional. For instance, at United now, the creative players are coming back and the wingbacks are going higher.”

“The attacking players are lower than the defensive players. If you have good attacking players, you want them [higher up the pitch].”

“Like I think Bruno has done really well in midfield, but I want to see Bruno higher, in and around the penalty area where he can shoot and create.”

Rooney added, “You’re ending up with so many defenders up the pitch and your midfield players who are good attacking players filling in at fullback spots and stuff. In some ways it’s OK if you’ve got the personnel.”

“But every team is doing it now and I think it’s a little bit too much.”

United are back in action on Thursday when they host Athletic Club in the return leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.
