  • Ian Wright sends Arsenal message to Viktor Gyokeres doubters

    [ad_1]

Gunners icon Ian Wright has brushed off concerns over Viktor Gyokeres’ lack of experience in a top league and is giving ARSENAL’s marquee summer signing the ‘benefit of the doubt

The Swedish striker has taken the No.14 shirt at the Emirates, once worn by legend Thierry Henry. Arsenal have signed Gyokeres in a deal worth £63.5million, an initial £54.8m up front, with a further £8.7m in additional clauses.

But there has also been some skepticism surrounding Gyokeres’ ability to make the step up when against defences of genuine quality, with the Sweden international yet to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

But ex-Arsenal striker Wright has sent a warning to the doubters of Gyokeres, he said:‘I spent five seasons in the First Division scoring goals and obviously there’s a lot of people looking at you all the time. There was a lot of talk around me and a lot of interest,’ Wright explained.

‘People start to say, “It’s going to happen”, and then ARSENAL came. Obviously, everybody knows the link with David Rocastle, we grew up on the same estate.

‘But I remember when I went to sign, I went home and watched the six o’clock news and they flicked to the streets and they’re saying, “What are we signing him for? We’ve got [Paul] Merson, we’ve got [Kevin] Campbell, we’ve got [Alan] Smith and we’ve got a young guy, Andy Cole, there as well. Why are we signing him? He’s only played in the First Division!”, and bro, I was watching it and you just get hot.

‘I was petrified and when I went there. They were champions two out of the last three years, but what I realised more than anything else was I had gone to a place where I’d gone to another level.’

Wright added: ‘I was playing in games, I’d score two goals and I must have had a maximum of five touches because people are making runs, people are doing different things, I’m not making as much work as I did at Palace.

‘What you realise is that it’s the same thing with Gyokeres, it’s the same thing.’

‘I heard Mark Robins from Coventry say that every time Gyokeres trained, he looked like somebody in a rush, in a hurry, he needs to make up time and I totally got that because once I got to Arsenal I realised I was in a place where I could make up time

‘People are talking about the league Gyokeres played in and the fact he doesn’t score against this kind of team, he only scores penalties, this and that… it doesn’t matter.

‘What I’ve heard and what I loved that I heard from Gyokeres is that man wants to be there. I wanted to be there because I knew once I got in amongst these guys and they create these chances, I’m going to take them. All I was focussed on was hitting targets and taking chances.’

  • Ian Wright pleased Arsenal made Ollie Watkins move

    [ad_1]

Ian Wright says he was ‘pleased’ ARSENAL at least made an attempt to sign Ollie Watkins this winter, as the Gunners made a last minute move to sign the Aston Villa star on deadline day.

Fans have been calling for the Gunners to strengthen in the final third in recent weeks, especially after injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. But Arsenal were unable to bring in any players in the final days of the window, and Mikel Arteta has admitted he is unhappy with his lack of options up front.

The likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Dusan Vlahovic and Yoane Wissa were all linked in recent weeks, as well as Ollie Watkins and Alexander Isak, but Wright believes it was ‘always going to be tough’ for Arsenal to bring in the calibre of player they desired.

‘It was always going to be tough for us. Isak wasn’t even an option,’ the legendary ex-Arsenal striker said on the Wrighty’s House podcast.

‘When we’re talking about strikers, it’s a gamble and I don’t care who you are. Darwin Nunez, Rasmus Hojlund… Isak went for £63m, he’s the only one in recent times that I’m looking at as a striker who has probably doubled his money.

‘You look at Nicolas Jackson. For £32m, I’m happy with that. But when you start getting past £50m, you have to start thinking that it’s a pure gamble.

‘They’re hoping that it works and I don’t think Arsenal can afford to do that. That’s probably why they went for a 29-year-old in Ollie Watkins or Villa tried to get him to come to us, whatever it was.

‘As a club, I don’t think we can afford to take the chance on those kind of signings hitting or missing. It has to hit with Arsenal and this is why it’s so tough.

‘I’ve always thought it was so difficult to get somebody in January. Who is going to leave at that stage who is the calibre of player you want? We’re going to have to see something in the summer.’

    Reporter Iomie Stanley says…

ARSENAL f****d up by not signing a new striker in the January window, they had the whole month to make moves, they could have got Jhon Duran for just £54 million if they made an offer, but now, they waited until deadline day to make moves.

‘If Arsenal wants to win that title, they need a striker, someone that can score 30 goals a season, they have players that can create chances, but Kai Havertz is not good enough and it could cost them come the end of the season.’
