Manchester United are reportedly preparing to challenge a host of Premier League clubs for Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande.

The Red Devils are keen to improve numerous departments in their squad with the attack being the first priority.

It is claimed that Crystal Palace are keen on the defender due to a potential departure of Marc Guehi to Newcastle United.

Numerous clubs are said to be keeping an eye on the 21 year old who was recently named in the league’s team of the season.

Palace are said to be the most advanced in their pursuit of Diomande. After enquiries they learned that “the Lions will only be willing to sit at the negotiating table for values in the region of €60 million”, due to him becoming one of the leaders of the defence this season.

The FA Cup winners are not the only club in the mix though as “Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United, as well as Bayern Munich are also keeping an eye on the defender and could make an offer in the coming days.”

The Ivorian played 46 games this season, solidifying himself as one of the most exciting defensive talents in Portugal.

Data analysis has shown that Manchester United target Viktor Gyokeres would likely only score 15 goals in the Premier League were he to move this summer.

The Red Devils were incredibly wasteful in attack last season and have already agreed a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha.

The report suggests that “Viktor Gyokeres is scoring goals for fun for Sporting Lisbon but history suggests attackers from the Primeira Liga do not fare so well in the Premier League.”

The research “analysed the 15 most expensive attacking Premier League signings from Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and Spain over the past 15 years”, in order to determine who carried the best goalscoring form over to England. The player’s goal-per-game ratio in their final season abroad was compared with “their subsequent goals-per-game record in England.”

The paper warns that none of the signings from Portugal have been able to match their output in England. Generally speaking, in the case of United and most Premier League clubs, players from the Primeira Liga do tend to adapt quite well in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, their production still significantly drops. This can be witnessed in the fact that Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, Evanilson, Fabio Vieira and United’s own Bruno Fernandes, have seen a decrease in the volume of goals they score in England.

The report adds, “even the likes of Díaz and Fernandes, who have unquestionably been successful signings, have been unable to maintain the goalscoring rate they showed in their final campaigns in Portugal.”

In fact, data highlights that players face a 62 per cent decline in goalscoring when they move from Portugal to England.

This stands to reason owing to the fact that the Premier League is objectively a tougher and higher quality league than the Portuguese equivalent.

The Telegraph claim, “these players averaged 0.41 goals per game in their last seasons in Portugal, and have subsequently produced an average of 0.15 goals per game in England.”

In fact, out of the 15 players analysed, only Raúl Jiménez scored at a faster rate in England than in Portugal.

Nonetheless, it must be said that none of the players scored at the colossal rate that Gyokeres has in Portugal. It is natural that he would be unlikely to be able to replicate his 39 goals in Portugal in the Premier League but even 20 would be a massive upgrade on the four that Hojlund managed last term.

What’s more, the Swede has already experienced significant game time in England owing to his experience with Coventry City in the past.

Finally, while the results are interesting, it also has to be mentioned that every player is unique and arrives in different circumstances. A hypothetical move to Old Trafford for Gyokeres would see him arrive at a team playing in a formation he is incredibly comfortable in and also with a manager who has got the very best out of him previously.

Now that the Premier League season has ended, they have revealed how the standings would have looked if VAR had ensured every call was flawless.

Arsenal, initially expected to challenge for the title, saw their hopes fade well before the final matchday.

However, Squawka’s findings suggest that officiating controversies may have widened the gap at the top more than necessary.

Mikel Arteta’s side faced three contentious red card incidents, including one where VAR upgraded William Saliba’s yellow card against Bournemouth to a dismissal.

Had those decisions gone differently—or if VAR had not intervened—the Gunners might have finished just two points behind the champions instead of ten.

This shift comes from Arsenal gaining five additional points while Liverpool lost three.

The top four remains unchanged in terms of the teams occupying those spots, with Manchester City and Chelsea securing third and fourth place, but there is a significant shake-up in fifth position.

Nottingham Forest have long voiced their frustrations with VAR, and this season has given them even more reason to feel aggrieved.

Without controversial officiating errors, they would have secured the final Champions League spot, pushing Newcastle and Aston Villa down a place each.

Brentford, meanwhile, had an impressive campaign despite losing their star striker Ivan Toney. Bryan Mbeumo’s 20-goal haul and key contributions from Yoane Wissa helped Thomas Frank’s side finish 10th.

However, they should have placed even higher, with VAR decisions costing them crucial points.

Had officiating been flawless, Brentford would have ended the season with 60 points instead of 56, securing eighth place and coming within touching distance of UEFA Conference League qualification.

This adjustment would have also seen Brighton and Bournemouth drop further down the table.

Brentford suffered four unfavorable VAR calls without a single decision going their way, a ratio only worse for Arsenal and Aston Villa. In contrast, Brighton benefited from five favorable calls while avoiding any setbacks.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace’s FA Cup-winning season could have been even sweeter, as they would have overtaken Fulham in the standings.

Manchester United’s struggles were further highlighted by VAR’s impact. Without officiating errors, Wolves—Matheus Cunha’s former club—would have finished above United, making his move to Old Trafford seem like a step down.

Wolves would have climbed to 14th, leaving United stuck in 15th, while Tottenham would have gained an extra place to move up to 16th.

The biggest losers in this scenario were West Ham United, who would have ended up just above the relegation zone.

Among the relegated teams, the standings wouldn’t have changed much, except for Ipswich Town, who would have edged above Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester into 18th. While not a major shift, it would have slightly improved their merit payment.

VAR’s influence on the season has once again sparked debate, with clubs left wondering how different things could have been without its interference.

According to reports, UEFA has now agreed to implement a new rule that will allow teams finishing higher in the League Phase to host the second leg throughout the knockout rounds.

This decision was made during a committee meeting ahead of the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

The competition underwent a significant format change this season, expanding to include a League Phase where the top eight teams automatically advanced to the last 16.

Teams finishing between ninth and 24th had to compete in a play-off, while the remaining clubs were eliminated.

Despite finishing lower than their opponents, PSG and Inter Milan were granted home advantage in the second leg of their semi-final ties against Arsenal and Barcelona.

Both teams capitalized on this advantage to reach the final.

Under the new rule, teams with higher League Phase rankings will host the second leg of their knockout ties.

If this regulation had been in place this season, Arsenal would have played Real Madrid and PSG at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg of their respective matchups.

Although the 2025/26 regulations have already been published, modifications can still be made if approved by the Executive Committee.

A virtual meeting will be held before the League Phase draw on August 28 to finalize the changes.

Discussions had initially explored the possibility of allowing higher-ranked teams to choose whether to play the second leg at home or away, but UEFA ultimately decided to grant them home advantage automatically.

Amorim, meanwhile, defended his decision and even pointed out Garnacho’s error in the semi final against Lyon.

When asked if he should have brought Garnacho on earlier during the final, Amorim said: ‘How many times have we had this conversation, and it was the opposite? Some players come in, like Mason Mount, against Bilbao and changed the game.

‘So now it is easy to say. Who missed the big opportunity in the first half against Bilbao? Yeah [Garnacho]. Of course, now it is easy for us to talk about a lot of views.’

Amorim has reportedly informed United’s squad that he will remain in charge at Old Trafford this summer and has made it clear that Garnacho will be leaving the club.

Garnacho had drawn interest from Chelsea and Napoli during the January transfer window, but neither club was able to finalize a deal with United, despite the club lowering their asking price.

Napoli, having recently sold Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain, had been searching for a new winger but indicated that Garnacho’s wage demands contributed to the breakdown of negotiations.

Reports suggest that United are once again open to offers for Garnacho in the summer and are prepared to sell him for a set transfer fee.

Additionally, the club is looking to generate further funds by offloading Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford.

Garnacho remains under contract with United for the next three years.

Opta’s supercomputer has analyzed the situation, running thousands of simulations to predict which teams will finish in the top five alongside Liverpool and Arsenal.

According to the projections, Manchester City has the highest probability of securing a Champions League spot, followed by Newcastle and Chelsea.

Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are expected to miss out.

The supercomputer has given City a strong chance of finishing in the top five, while Newcastle and Chelsea also have favorable odds. Villa’s chances are lower, and Forest faces an uphill battle to qualify.

Based on these predictions, the current standings are likely to remain unchanged by the end of matchday 38.

Meanwhile, Tottenham has already booked their place in next season’s Champions League after their Europa League final victory over Manchester United.
