Owen Hargreaves slams Manchester United’s summer transfer business – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United headed into the summer transfer market with major surgery required to the squad, after a record Premier League low of 15th sent shockwaves around Old Trafford.

INEOS were tasked with transforming the options available to Ruben Amorim who failed to get a tune out of the crop left behind by Erik ten Hag.

United struggled for goals last season and sought to solve that issue as a priority in the window.

Therefore, a new front line was granted to the Portuguese head coach in the shape of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

However, United are running into the same old issues and have found consistent performances hard to come by since the start of the new campaign.

Was the money better spent elsewhere?

United’s rocky opening to the season has heaped pressure on Amorim and Owen Hargreaves believes the summer moves have left more questions than answers around the new-look side.

As reported by The Mirror, Hargreaves claims the singings of Mbeumo and Cunha in particular have had a detrimental effect on Bruno Fernandes, who has found himself in a deeper role this term.

With the two new stars now occupying the roles behind the striker, Fernandes has been tasked with controlling things further away from the opposition’s goal.

Best number 10 in the division

Hargreaves says he would have used the summer budget in other areas in order for Fernandes to continue occupying his role as a number 10, where he has been so dangerous over the years.

“You have the best number 10 in the division, and you drop him (deeper) because you want someone to play through midfield because you have Cunha and Mbeumo.

“So why didn’t you just sign a central midfield player to play there and let Bruno do his thing with Cunha? Then a goalkeeper. It would have fixed a lot of issues,” he said.

Hargreaves adds that he can see the logic behind United’s summer strategy but clearly believes other positions should have been prioritised over multiple signings in attack.

“I appreciate that you needed more goals. They (United) have thought that more goals will get us higher up the table than, say, a world-class goalkeeper,” he said.

United did add to their goalkeeping ranks late in the market and early signs suggest Senne Lammens will be closer to solving that problem position than Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir.

Lammens’s solid debut against Sunderland has left him favorite to start the blockbuster fixture at Anfield this coming Sunday, with United gunning to leave a mark on their old rivals and finally get their season up-and-running.

  • Crystal Palace chief opens up on Adam Wharton’s links to Manchester United – Man United News And Transfer News

Crystal Palace chief opens up on Adam Wharton’s links to Manchester United – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United are expected to sign a new midfielder in 2026 to address their issues in the middle of the park. Ruben Amorim has deployed Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the midfield pivot, with mixed results so far.

While the Portuguese superstar has adapted his game well to suit a change in position, the Brazilian is not a long-term solution for the job. Casemiro is already in the final 12 months of his contract at the Theatre of Dreams and is likely to be on his way at the end of this season.

With the team struggling to control games, the Red Devils arguably need someone capable of orchestrating the midfield. Adam Wharton was already on the club’s radar in the summer, and recent reports suggest that he is back on their agenda.

Wharton a fine choice for the job

Wharton rose through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers before breaking into the first team in 2022. His performances at Ewood Park earned him admirers at Crystal Palace, who signed him in the summer of 2024.

Despite an injury-ravaged debut campaign, Wharton managed to catch the eye with his ball distribution and his ability to dictate the tempo from deep. He also played a key role in Palace’s FA Cup triumph, finishing the season with two assists from 26 games.

He has been outstanding for the London club this season, registering one assist in 10 games, all of which were starts. United legend Rio Ferdinand has already urged the club to sign the player, comparing him to former midfielder Michael Carrick.

A recent report from The Peoples Person stated that United are already preparing a £60m offer for the 21 year old in 2026, which they believe will be enough to convince the Eagles. Palace co-owner Steve Parish has now responded to the rumours.

    Palace relaxed about the situation

Speaking to talkSPORT, Parish acknowledged that Wharton will want to leave Selhurst Park for a Champions League club in the near future.

“I think Adam at some point will want to play either in the Champions League with us, if we can make that happen, or probably with another club,” said Parish.

“He’s an extraordinary talent. I think right now, and I can’t speak for Adam, but I think he’s focused on his time at Crystal Palace. He had a broken season last season with the groin issues that he had that a lot of young players get.

“I think this season he’s completely focused on putting the games in, getting in the England squad, being a regular for us, and making sure that he can show that Saturday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday. It’s a difficult programme for us right now. I think he’s very committed to the club. I don’t know where all this stuff comes from.”

When asked about interest from United, Parish added: “If Manchester United want Adam Wharton, that’s nothing surprising really about that.”

“The fact of the matter is he’s got a long contract to run. There’s no pressure on us to do it, and I don’t think there’s any real pressure from the player either.”

Wharton has all the attributes to be an ideal partner for Bruno Fernandes at the heart of Amorim’s midfield. The Englishman’s presence could allow the Portuguese to resume his natural game and have a greater impact higher up on the pitch.

Wharton’s contract expires in 2029, but a recent report states that Palace are already planning to offer him a new deal. As such, prising him away from Selhurst Park may not be straightforward for United.

  • Tottenham Join Manchester United in Pursuit of Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen

Tottenham Join Manchester United in Pursuit of Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen

    [ad_1]

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered the race to sign Barcelona veteran goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, joining Manchester United and Newcastle United in the chase, according to Fichajes.

Spurs eye world-class experience between the sticks

Since Hugo Lloris’ departure, Tottenham have been on the lookout for a reliable long-term option in goal. While Guglielmo Vicario arrived from Empoli and initially impressed, his recent inconsistency has raised concerns within the club. With ambitions of returning to the Champions League, Spurs are now exploring the possibility of landing a proven shot-stopper like Ter Stegen.

The North London side have reportedly made contact with Barcelona to understand the conditions of a potential deal. However, they’ll face stiff competition — Manchester United and Newcastle United have also spoken with Barça regarding the 33-year-old’s availability.

United’s dilemma and Ter Stegen’s uncertain future

United, under Ruben Amorim, signed Senne Lammens this summer, and the young Belgian showed promise on debut. Yet the Red Devils are believed to want an experienced figure to guide him and provide competition. Ter Stegen’s pedigree, with nearly a decade of experience at the top level, makes him an ideal candidate.

At Barcelona, the German goalkeeper’s situation has grown complicated. Once the undisputed No.1 after joining from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, Ter Stegen has struggled with injuries and inconsistent form. The arrival of Joan García signalled a new era, but with both keepers currently sidelined, the Catalans face a tricky dilemma.

A January exit on the cards?

Ter Stegen — valued at around £7 million — is reportedly open to a January move to secure regular playing time ahead of next summer’s World Cup. Once regarded among the best goalkeepers in the world, he now finds himself at a career crossroads.

While his form may have dipped, his experience and quality could make him a valuable short-term asset. Whether it’s Tottenham, Manchester United, or Newcastle, one of these Premier League giants could soon hand the German star a fresh start in England.

Manchester United Considering January Move for Marc-André ter Stegen

    [ad_1]

Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen in the January transfer window, according to Sport (via SportWitness).

    United Weigh Goalkeeping Reinforcements

The Red Devils have already made moves to strengthen their goalkeeping department this season. After being linked with several options over the summer, they eventually signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day, while André Onana was loaned out to Trabzonspor for the rest of the campaign.

Lammens impressed in his debut against Sunderland last weekend, keeping a clean sheet and showcasing strong reflexes. However, his promising start hasn’t silenced rumours that United may still be in the market for an experienced keeper. Reports suggest that contact has been made with Barcelona over a potential loan deal with an option to buy for ter Stegen in January.

Barcelona Open to Exit — If Ter Stegen Pushes

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, ter Stegen knows consistent playing time will be crucial to securing his place in Germany’s squad. Barcelona are said to be open to sanctioning his departure, but only if the 33-year-old requests a move mid-season.

Financial Hurdles Could Block the Move

Despite United’s reported interest, a deal appears unlikely at this stage. The club were previously keen on Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, but pulled out due to his wage demands and transfer fee. Similar financial concerns could apply to ter Stegen, who currently earns around £276,000 per week—a figure well above United’s preferred wage structure.

Adding to the uncertainty, ter Stegen is still recovering from a back injury and isn’t expected to return until November, raising doubts about his form and fitness heading into the second half of the season.

For now, United are expected to monitor Lammens’ progress closely before making any major goalkeeping moves in January.

  • Manchester United Plot £70m Move for Real Madrid Star Federico Valverde

Manchester United Plot £70m Move for Real Madrid Star Federico Valverde

    [ad_1]

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bold £70 million offer for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, as Ruben Amorim looks to reshape his midfield ahead of the January transfer window.

    United’s Midfield Concerns

Amorim has been forced to experiment this season, with Bruno Fernandes deployed alongside Casemiro in a deeper role. While Fernandes offers creativity, his attacking instincts often leave United vulnerable in transitions. Add to that Manuel Ugarte’s ongoing form and fitness struggles, plus Kobbie Mainoo’s uncertain future after pushing for an exit in the summer, and it’s clear why reinforcements are a priority.

According to Fichajes, United are eyeing Valverde as the ideal solution, with a potential swap deal involving Mainoo also being discussed.

Why Valverde Seems Out of Reach

Despite talk of a move, prising Valverde away from Madrid looks highly unlikely. The Uruguayan may not have enjoyed the brightest start under new boss Xabi Alonso, but he remains a key figure for Los Blancos and a fan favourite at the Bernabeu. Having lifted two Champions League titles and repeatedly stated his desire to spend his career in Madrid, Valverde is not expected to jump ship anytime soon.

    The Bigger Picture for United

Even if United table a £70 million bid, Madrid would likely demand a much higher figure for one of their most prized assets. On top of that, United’s current struggles in the league and uncertainty over Champions League qualification make it a tough sell for a player of Valverde’s calibre.

Still, Amorim’s intent to strengthen the midfield is clear, and with the January transfer window approaching, United fans could yet see fresh faces arrive — even if Valverde himself remains firmly out of reach.

Ruben Amorim has three games to save Manchester United job – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is sitting uncomfortably on the hot seat at Old Trafford at the moment.

The Portuguese was appointed by INEOS as Erik ten Hag’s replacement last November following an impressive run with Sporting. Unfortunately, he has failed to replicate that form at the Theatre of Dreams.

Amorim registered a 71% win ratio with the Portuguese club, winning 164 of his 231 games in charge. But at United, he has managed just 17 wins from 47 games so far, including a run of one win from five games this season.

That includes the dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last weekend, which has seen his win percentage with the club drop to an alarming 36.17%.

    Patience yet to bear fruit

United convinced Amorim to take charge in the middle of last season, and were considerate of his poor record at the end of the campaign. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season and lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.

INEOS invested over £200m in shiny new signings for their Portuguese head coach, hoping that a full pre-season could help his cause. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

The Premier League giants have lost three of their opening five games this season, scoring six goals and conceding nine. They are 14th in the league table, with just four points in four games, and were knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two minnows Grimsby Town.

Recent reports have suggested that INEOS are still backing Amorim, and that he will be afforded until the end of the season to turn things around. Interestingly, Erik ten Hag was also given similar assurances and was sacked after nine games last season.

    A massive decision ahead

According to journalist David McDonnell, writing for The Mirror, Amorim will only be afforded three games to get his act together.

The defeat against Manchester City and the poor start to the season haven’t been taken lightly by the club hierarchy.

United face Chelsea next at Old Trafford on September 20, before travelling to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford later this month. Their final game before October’s international break is against newly promoted Sunderland at the Theatre of Dreams, which, interestingly, is the eighth game of the league season.

By then, the Portuguese’s fate could be sealed, with the Premier League giants already shortlisting five candidates for the job.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been named as a possible option to replace Amorim at Old Trafford. Other names in the running are Fulham’s Marco Silva, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, former England head coach Gareth Southgate, and USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The Red Devils face Liverpool after the international break, and unless the Portuguese oversees an immediate change of fortunes, he may not be in charge at Anfield.

Interestingly, former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also available after parting ways with Besiktas last month.

  • Manchester United keeping eye on Emiliano Martinez

Manchester United keeping eye on Emiliano Martinez

    [ad_1]

Manchester United could revisit their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez when the January transfer window opens.

    Martinez back on United’s radar

According to Fichajes, Ruben Amorim’s side remain keen on Martinez, despite signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp this summer for around €21 million. The 23-year-old Belgian was brought in to become United’s new first-choice goalkeeper, but the club may reignite their pursuit of the Argentine World Cup winner if Lammens struggles to cement his spot.

Villa’s star man uncertain about his future

Martinez has been a cornerstone of Aston Villa since arriving in 2020, helping Unai Emery’s side rise in both domestic and European competitions. However, the 33-year-old pushed for a move this summer, with Old Trafford strongly linked as a potential destination. Reports suggest United even had the green light from Martinez himself on deadline day, but a move never materialised.

Despite having four years left on his current deal, Martinez’s future at Villa Park remains in question. With whispers that he could be available in January—and his desire for regular football ahead of the World Cup—the door may still be open for a switch.

    Decision time for Amorim

The coming months will be crucial. If Lammens adapts quickly and impresses as United’s number one, Amorim may stick with youth. But should the pressure prove too much, the Red Devils could make a fresh bid for Martinez, who is valued at around €25 million.

For United, it’s a balancing act: back the long-term potential of a young talent or secure the proven experience of a World Cup-winning goalkeeper.

  • Manchester United enter race to hijack Como’s move for Aymeric Laporte – Football Views

    [ad_1]

Manchester United are set to rival Serie A newcomers Como for the signing of Aymeric Laporte, with the experienced defender expected to leave Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr this summer.

Laporte, who only joined Al Nassr from Manchester City in 2023, has been told he is free to move on and is now weighing up a return to European football. United’s interest comes after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford last weekend, where Ruben Amorim’s men showed promise but also underlined the need for defensive reinforcements.

United Eye Experience at the Back

With less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window, the Red Devils are pushing to add at least one more centre-back. Laporte, a four-time Premier League winner with Manchester City, is seen as an ideal candidate to bring leadership and title-winning pedigree to Amorim’s squad.

During his stint in Saudi Arabia, the Spaniard made 47 appearances for Al Nassr and even chipped in with 8 goals. But at 31, he is eager for a fresh challenge at the top level and has reportedly instructed his representatives to secure a move back to Europe.

    Como Agreement Under Threat

Italian side Como were believed to be close to finalising a deal for Laporte, with rumours suggesting personal terms had already been agreed. However, Manchester United’s late approach could turn the situation on its head, especially given the allure of returning to the Premier League — even if it means wearing the red of United, fierce rivals of his former club Manchester City.

For Amorim, Laporte’s arrival would not only strengthen United’s back line but also send a message of ambition heading into a crucial campaign. The next few days could prove decisive in one of the more intriguing twists of the summer transfer window.

  • Benjamin Sesko’s Manchester United salary details emerge – Man United News And Transfer News

Benjamin Sesko’s Manchester United salary details emerge – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Details have emerged of the wages that RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko will command at Manchester United.

Sesko on brink of finalising United move

Sesko is close to finalising his blockbuster transfer from Leipzig to United after the two clubs reached an agreement on Thursday.

United had been pursuing Sesko for weeks, but they were not alone in their interest as Newcastle were also seriously on the hunt for his signature.

The Magpies tabled two offers for Sesko, the latest one valuing him at €90m. Newcastle also offered the forward significantly higher wages than United had put on the table. However, Sesko still rejected them and chose the Red Devils, whose offer was actually a bit lower.

United are expected to pay Leipzig an initial £66.3m and the rest in potential add-ons. The total package is worth around £73.3m.

Sesko has already landed in Manchester as he looks to undergo his medical and sign his contract before he can officially be considered a United player.

Fabrizio Romano revealed United are planning to unveil the 22-year-old on Saturday, just before their pre-season meeting with Fiorentina at Old Trafford.

Now, a Slovenian journalist has disclosed the exact sum Sesko is set to pocket at United.

    Sesko’s salary details

According to Sportklub journalist Rok Viškovič, Sesko is in line to net £160,000 per week at United. This figure is expected to rise once the Red Devils secure a return to the Champions League.

Viškovič wrote on X, “How much will Benjamin Sesko earn at Manchester United?”

“According to my information, £160,000 per week, which amounts to just over £8 million or just under €10 million per year.”

“The contract also includes a clause stating that – if Manchester United qualifies for the Champions League – his deal will improve by 25 percent, to £200,000 per week (approximately €230,000).”

At £160,000 per week, Sesko would be earning just a bit more than Mbeumo and Luke Shaw (as per Capology).

Sesko is expected to put pen to paper on a five-year contract until 2030.
