Man United’s Andre Onana shines on Trabzonspor debut despite loss to Fenerbahce – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United loanee Andre Onana enjoyed a strong start to life at Trabzonspor, despite the side falling to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Fenerbahce.

Last week, United confirmed that Onana had completed a loan switch to Trabzonspor, where he will spend the 2025/26 season.

United made the decision to let him leave after it became apparent that he was no longer in Ruben Amorim’s thinking. The deadline-day singing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp all but confirmed this position.

Onana started in Trabzonspor’s meeting with Fenerbahce on Sunday and produced an impressive performance for his side, who were reduced to 10 men. Onana certainly didn’t cover himself in glory for Youssef En-Nesyri’s goal, but it could have been much worse for the visitors without some of his interventions.

    Onana’s performance

Onana prevented 1.76 goals. He made an impressive four saves from inside the box.

He stepped off his line twice and dealt with both situations well, while also making a couple of high claims that eased the pressure on his new teammates.

The Cameroonian touched the ball 57 times and managed to pick out a Trabzonspor player with 19 of the 38 passes he attempted. He aimed 31 long balls and connected with 12 of these.

The loss was a costly one for Onana and Trabzonspor, as it saw them slip down to third, with Fenerbahçe now assuming second place.

However, the United loanee will undoubtedly be looking to build on the positives ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Gaziantep. Sofascore named him the man-of-the-match against Fenerbahce.

    Enzo Kana-Biyik’s performance

Another United loanee who was in action on Sunday was Enzo Kana-Biyik, who came on from the bench as INEOS-owned FC Lausanne Sport fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Grasshopper Club Zurich.

Muhannad Al-Saad’s goal only proved to be a consolation prize for Lausanne Sport, who were already down three goals by the time he found the back of the net.

Kana-Biyik was afforded 36 minutes and during that period, completed two of the three dribbles he embarked on and delivered six of the nine passes he attempted. One was a key pass.

The 18-year-old was brilliant defensively, winning six of the nine ground duels he delved into. He also contributed four tackles and made one clearance.

Sadly for Lausanne Sport, Kana-Biyik was unable to spark a comeback.

  • Paul Parker runs the rule over Senne Lammens, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir – Man United News And Transfer News

Paul Parker runs the rule over Senne Lammens, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Legendary Manchester United defender Paul Parker is happy the club has brought in a new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, even though he would have preferred a more experienced option.

Speaking exclusively to The Peoples Person courtesy of WhichBookie, Parker explained why sending Andre Onana on loan to Trabzonspor is the right decision by INEOS.

    Back to basics

“Getting him out of the club’s a good thing,” he said. “You couldn’t have him around with the new young goalkeeper coming in, because you just don’t know how he was going to be with him.

“I’d rather see out with the old and in with the new, even if it’s only a loan. You want the young lad to come in. He’s 22 years of age. 22 years of age goalkeeper now is not the same as a 22-year-old goalkeeper from 10, 20 years ago. Different mentality.

“I’m hoping this lad is quite strong mentally. Goalkeepers generally grow up very, very quick. But you have to be stupid as well. You have to be stupid to dive at people’s feet!

“I don’t want a good-looking goalkeeper. You want someone who looks like a goalkeeper, with good hands, and presents himself as a goalkeeper. He doesn’t go around talking about keeping passes to the minimum, playing on the edge, passing through the back. No! Save the ball! Catch it!

“When a corner’s coming, don’t allow different coloured shirts to affect your judgment on where the ball’s going to and where it’s coming from. See the ball at all times. That’s what you want. And when you save it, don’t push it back to where it comes from. Try and catch it.

“When you go to punch, try and punch in a manner that you’re not going to take out players and allow VAR to give penalties.”

    Mentality is everything

The former England man said that signing Lammens carries a lot of risk.

“So, I would say this new goalkeeper, he’s number two in Belgium, but …we’ve signed a number one from Turkey, that didn’t work out, did it, really?”

Parker added that he would have rather United had signed Emiliano Martinez or Gianluigi Donnarumma, “because of their coolness, because they both had presence.”

On the other hand, he conceded that “they’ve got somebody who’s hungry, they’ve looked at longevity and gone down that road, which is absolutely perfect. You get a really good young goalkeeper who will have his moments if he’s young, but still you can bounce off the back of them. Somebody who wants to improve.”

    Panic at the Cottage

Parker mentioned the emotion generated in United’s first two Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham and Altay Bayindir’s performance under pressure.

“You need a presence in there who’s got stature. If he is being blocked off, he’s big enough to say a knee in the back ain’t going to hurt too much.

“Just the presence will make a difference rather than what we saw when Arsenal played.

“Fulham put a corner in the box every time and it was frightening. I was commentating on the game. I think people thought I was on a helter skelter. Just the noises that might have been going through the mic every time Fulham and Arsenal got corners!

“There was a panic on there, there was a panic. It was everything, everything was scary. “

Although the 61-year-old said that Martinez or Donnarumma would have brought immediate presence, he noted that either would have been a relatively short-term fix and said he hoped the club were making a similar shrewd investment on a young keeper as they had in the past.

“It was that £600,000 I think Pete[r Schmeichel] was. And look what happened to him. So you really don’t know.

“And Pete, as you know, Pete still is, but was, ambitious. All you hope is that Lammens has got that little bit in him to want to be a Schmeichel, to want to be a Van der Sar as well…he’s got that body shape hasn’t he? That greyhound look.”

“Whereas you look at Onana, he’s a whole box of muscles. No great agility in that way, no movement, just a bundle of muscles. Today’s goalkeepers are lean. Let’s hope he’s mean.”

Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir: Man United have decided who they want to offload – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has quite the conundrum to solve when it comes to his goalkeepers.

Andre Onana committed several high-profile errors last season, and that trend has continued this season, with the Cameroonian responsible for the club’s humiliating EFL Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town.

His backup, Altay Bayindir, has also not set the stage alight. The Portuguese tactician turned to the Turk in the Premier League, but he has made mistakes in all three games so far.

Which is why the ex-Sporting CP boss pushed for a new goalkeeper with INEOS landing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Both goalies have not covered themselves in glory

Emiliano Martinez was left heartbroken as his move collapsed on deadline day due to Jadon Sancho’s unwillingness to move to Aston Villa permanently.

Now with the Belgian onboard, the 20-time English league champions have four senior goalkeepers, and something has to give.

Tom Heaton, who signed a new deal in the summer, is unlikely to leave, having been made a member of the leadership group within the squad, with many players feeling he is good enough to replace either Onana or Bayindir.

There have been reports stating INEOS are looking to offload both goalies, with the Cameroon international attracting interest from both Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, with the ex-Fenerbahce ace could head back to his homeland.

But Teamtalk have now revealed that United would prefer to offload Andre Onana instead, and it makes a lot of sense. He is the higher earner, and is on the hunt for a new contract, something he is unlikely to receive at Old Trafford.

    Onana to be cut loose

“United are listening to offers for BOTH Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

“However, they are only expected to green-light the exit of one of them, given new signing Senne Lammens, from Royal Antwerp, will take over from the other, either as the starter or the second choice.

“TEAMtalk is aware that Onana is indeed going to be cut loose if United can find a club to take him. Sources have stated they are more than willing to part ways with the former Inter Milan goalkeeper.”

He will also depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, and Amorim would prefer to not lose too many stars at that crucial juncture of the season.

Andre Onana: Inter Milan make shock decision on Man United star – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Inter Milan have reportedly taken a surprise transfer stance on Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after he was left out of the matchday squad that lost to Arsenal.

Onana did not feature against Arsenal

As United fell to an unlucky 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday at Old Trafford, there were two notable absences – Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Hojlund was dropped from the squad by Ruben Amorim amidst raging speculation over his future at the club. Hojlund has apparently been told that he will struggle for minutes and as such, it would be best for him to leave and seek a fresh challenge elsewhere. The Dane’s preference remains to stay at United.

But Onana’s situation raised a few more eyebrows. Before the match, Amorim told reporters that the goalkeeper was fit and had not been included in the matchday squad because others like Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton had done more to warrant a place in the team.

After the final whistle, Amorim emphasised that he had not dropped Onana, but that has done little to quell suggestions that he could be on his way out of United.

The Red Devils are believed to be open to offers for the shot-stopper after a difficult 2024/25 season, in which he made numerous high-profile mistakes that dearly cost the team.

Onana has been linked to AS Monaco and the Saudi Pro League but United have yet to receive concrete offers for him.

Now, The Sun reveal that Inter are seriously considering a reunion with the Cameroonian

    Inter make Onana decision

According to The Sun, “Inter Milan are monitoring Andre Onana’s situation at Manchester United, as speculation grows over the goalkeeper’s future.”

“SunSport can reveal his former club Inter are interested in re-signing a player who was a massive success in Italy.”

“Onana, 29, also remains a cult-hero among Inter supporters after helping them reach the 2023 Champions League final, which they lost to Manchester City.”

Inter bosses are said to be confident that Onana would green-light a return to the San Siro.

In addition to Onana, the Nerazzuri are also exploring a move for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens. The Belgian goalkeeper is believed to also be on United’s radar.

Why Andre Onana misses out vs Arsenal now revealed – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Ruben Amorim has been forced into another alteration ahead of Manchester United’s opening Premier League clash against Arsenal.

It was relayed by The Peoples Person that Rasmus Hojlund had been dropped from the matchday squad, indicating a likely exit with AC Milan in pole position.

Now, as revealed by The Athletic, Andre Onana will also not be a part of the match on Sunday, with Altay Bayindir set to start in goal.

The Cameroonian had suffered a hamstring injury, and had missed the club’s entire pre-season. But he had returned to team training and had expressed hope that he would be fit in time for the match against the Gunners.

    Andre Onana misses out

“Andre Onana is not part of Manchester United’s matchday squad for today’s visit of Arsenal. Altay Bayindir will start in goal.

“Onana suffered a hamstring injury in early July and missed United’s pre-season fixtures, but had been aiming to return for fitness for their first competitive match of the season.

“Since returning from that lay-off, the 29-year-old has only trained three times and is working alone at the club’s Carrington training ground today.”

The Portuguese tactician will be hoping his No.1 can regain fitness ahead of United’s next league game against Fulham next Sunday.

    Bayindir selected

As for Bayindir, he has looked far from comfortable when thrust into action, and it will be interesting to see how he performs.

Apart from his FA Cup heroics, he has looked shaky with the ball at his feet, and has committed several errors.

It is clear to see from both options at the head coach’s disposal, that the Red Devils could do with strengthening in goal.

There were links with Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as well as Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp.

Whether a goalie is bought before the transfer window slams shut will be interesting to see. Tom Heaton is on the bench for the game at Old Trafford.

  • Man United make unexpected call on Andre Onana after goalkeeper’s injury – Man United News And Transfer News

Man United make unexpected call on Andre Onana after goalkeeper’s injury – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United have made a surprise decision on Andre Onana, following news that the goalkeeper sustained a hamstring injury in training this week.

    Onana’s injury setback

Earlier on Saturday, it emerged that Onana had picked up a hamstring injury, which has ruled him out for United’s pre-season tour.

It was stated that the Cameroonian will be sidelined for between six to eight weeks, potentially keeping him out of United’s opening Premier League fixtures.

United kickstart their top-flight campaign on August 17 when they host Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Before that, the Red Devils begin their pre-season plans with an opening friendly against old foes Leeds United in Stockholm next weekend.

Ruben Amorim and his players will then fly out to the United States to take part in the Premier League Summer Series, where they’ll face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton. United will then wrap up their pre-season with a home match against Fiorentina on August 9.

Typically, Onana would have remained behind at Carrington to continue his rehabilitation in an effort to recover and gain match fitness as soon as possible.

However, according to Sky Sports, United have decided against this, choosing instead to have Onana in the pre-season travelling party.

Onana to go on club’s pre-season tour

Sky Sports state, “The Cameroon international continues to be assessed and is believed to have responded well to initial treatment.”

“Various reports have suggested Onana will be out for up to six weeks and will miss United’s pre-season tour in the USA.”

“However, Sky Sports News understands that the plan remains for him to travel with the rest of the squad to the US.”

This information has been corroborated by Sam Cohen, who relayed the same on X.

That United are choosing to travel with Onana strongly suggests he still features heavily in Amorim’s plans and despite suggestions, the club has no immediate or definitive plans to secure the services of a replacement.

  • “I am told…“: Fabrizio Romano explains exactly what he has heard about Monaco and Andre Onana

    [ad_1]

Surprising news dropped earlier today that Ligue 1 side Monaco has expressed interest in a deal for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.

It is widely established that the Cameroonian was a huge disappointment last season, as the goalie committed high-profile errors in both the Premier League and Europa League.

And Ruben Amorim is open to his departure, with INEOS offering the 29-year-old to clubs in the Saudi Pro League, but apart from interest from Neom SC, where Onana does not want to go, there have been no concrete proposals.

Which is why the United No.1 seemed confident of staying and starting between the sticks in the new season before Monaco’s interest came to light.

Andre Onana to Monaco not on

But Fabrizio Romano has revealed otherwise, claiming on his YouTube channel that the French side are not in active talks with the Cameroon international.

They do want a new goalkeeper but as things stand, Andre Onana is not the name they are seeking.

The Italian also claimed that should the former Inter Milan ace leave, the Red Devils would prefer a move for Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalie Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentine is open to the switch despite the 20-time English league champions not being in any European competition next season.

“I am told that Monaco are not in active talks to sign Andre Onana, despite what other reports have suggested. Monaco are looking to sign a keeper but they have not made any approach for Onana.

Martinez remains a target should Onana leave

“If Onana leaves for Saudi or other destinations, then United will try and sign a keeper and they really like Emiliano Martinez who is open to a move even without Champions League football.

“But it all depends on Onana, who is happy at Manchester United and is open to staying.”

Until Onana’s future is cleared up, a move for the Villa shot-stopper is unlikely, while his price is also a major hindrance.

Other options like Marco Carnesecchi and Diogo Costa are also on the table, and it will be interesting to see if INEOS strengthen in goal this summer.

Former Man United assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag opens up on why Andre Onana has struggled this season – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Andre Onana’s start to life as a Manchester United player was far from smooth, with huge errors in the Champions League causing the Red Devils to crash out in the group stages last season.

The Cameroonian was expected to come into his own in his sophomore campaign, but things have been far from smooth with the shot-stopper continuing his trend of making high-profile mistakes both in Europe and in the Premier League.

Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic had termed him the worst keeper in the club’s history, with many pundits opining that Ruben Amorim must let him go in the summer.

Exit rumours have multiplied in recent weeks but the head coach has continued to back him while his teammates and former legends have also offered their support.

    Van der Gaag offers support

Now, former assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag, who along with former boss Erik ten Hag brought the Cameroon international to the club, said the job of a goalkeeper at United was the hardest and Onana, like all other United players, has not performed to the best of his ability this term.

“It’s an emotional rollercoaster [being a goalkeeper for United],” he told BBC. “That’s what I think looking from the outside now but from last year’s experience as well.”

“Then you need results as well. Coaches, players need results. You need consistency from the team. I already knew Andre from Ajax and he’s a good goalkeeper. He showed that at Inter as well.”

But he backed the 29-year-old to come good. The Dutchman claimed that the former Ajax star had shown his mental fortitude to come back from low points earlier in his career as well and he is confident that shot-stopper can do the same now.

    Backed Onana to come good

“We cannot forget the impact Man Utd has on everyone. That criticism is there, excellence is expected and players have to deal with that. The other part is that there will always be comparisons.

“He is under pressure and scrutiny but he has overcome many challenges in his career before. At the start of last season, everyone was saying he was United’s best and most consistent player so it can change quickly.”

The Peoples Person has relayed that given Amorim’s need to strengthen up top, there might not be too much budget left over for goalkeeping reinforcements.

That means the United No 1 is safe for now but he must improve in order to prolong his United career.
