And the man known as the ‘Special One’ didn’t have to wait long to revisit one of his former clubs, as the Lisbon side met Chelsea in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

The Portuguese team suffered a narrow defeat after Richard Rios’ own goal in the 18th minute, and may feel unfortunate not to have earned a draw.

Still, Mourinho seemed to enjoy his return, reconnecting with familiar faces and chatting with staff before and after the match.

During the early stages, Chelsea fans chanted “Jose Mourinho! Jose Mourinho” and the coach responded with a wave and a kiss.

Post-match, despite the result, Mourinho reflected on his connection with Chelsea, saying they are part of his legacy.

“I feed myself with victories and results,” he said. “Of course, I thank them (the fans). I did it on the pitch.

“I know that there’s going to be a relationship forever. Hopefully, I will come back here in 20 years with my grandkids.”

As expected, the evening wasn’t without drama, with Mourinho stirring debate during his press conference.

While explaining tactical adjustments involving a second striker to break down Chelsea’s defence, he focused on Malo Gusto and remarked that Reece James is a “better player” than the French defender.

“I saw Malo Gusto in difficulties,” Mourinho said. “But then Maresca has Malo Gusto in difficulties, so he changes for a better player than Malo Gusto.

“This is Chelsea’s squad that allows them to do that.

“I’m there [at Benfica] for 10 days, I play four matches in 10 days, so everything was travel, play, recovery, play, recover, play, travel, so there is not much time for development. But today I liked the performance very much.”

Benfica’s next challenge is a clash with Porto. Mourinho will return to England on October 21 when his team takes on Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Chelsea’s inconsistencies have one route problem to them

The community has spoken here, and it’s pretty clear who we are blaming for the inconsistencies at the club.

Chelsea are currently in another slump, and no, it’s not just because we got players sent off and I’m not buying the injuries excuse either. Maybe don’t play injured players? There has been a lot of boasting through media briefings about our strength in depth, so where is it?

I ran a poll yesterday asking who you believed was MOST to blame for our current slump and inconsistencies since the new owners have come in.
- 70% say it’s the board/SDs/owners
- 17% say it’s the players
- 13% say it’s Enzo Maresca
The 70% are of course correct. After all, it is the board who hire the managers and recruit the players, so if they aren’t good enough, that is also on them. They make the decisions and the big calls, so they are 100% to blame in my view.

I have some gripes on Maresca but as I’ve said, I wont be pinning the most blame on him. He didn’t get what he wanted this summer in terms of recruitment, and I fully backed what he wanted as well. He didn’t get it, and here we are.

It’s not all doom and gloom. We can start by lighting it up again this week by beating Benfica. Then we can dream about beating Liverpool. Football can change fast, fans are unfortunately very fickle. If we start winning again you wont hear any of this noise. I always try to maintain consistency with my opinions and will not change them on and off after just a handful of games. I have always been concerned with the project and asked for more balance, that wont change until we sustain a period of success.

Giorgi Mamardashvili ready to challenge for number one at Liverpool

Former LIVERPOOL goalkeeper David James accepts new signing Giorgi Mamardashvili has the self-belief to think he can displace Alisson as first choice but patience may be the quality which serves him best.

The Georgia international joined the squad this summer after agreeing a move to Anfield from Valencia 12 months ago, and he will look to challenge Allison for that number one spot at Anfield over the next 12 months.

Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers in world football, he is a man that can walk into pretty much any side around the world, But Mamardashvili does not care and will look to become the clubs new number one, according to James.

“You have to understand Liverpool haven’t looked at Mamardashvili and thought ‘We need to fill a gap here’,” James told the PA news agency at an event for Carlsberg.

“Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world and it’s not often you get asked twice. Mamardashvili has come in as a direct challenger.

“He will have to believe he is good enough to play for Liverpool, one of the toughest goalkeeping positions in world football.

“But he has played at major tournaments and international finals and excelled so I don’t think the occasion is going to faze him.

“It will just be interesting if he doesn’t start the season how motivated he will be to wait for his opportunities, because he will get opportunities.”

Mamardashvili is a top stopper, Alisson is world class and displacing him as that LIVERPOOL number one will be very hard. But tis is probably the right time as Arne Slot wants this Liverpool squad to be his squad, and not Jurgen Klopps.

Mamardashvili will get his chances to impress the Dutch boss, so it will be interesting to see if he can displace Alisson, these two are top stoppers.

“The Blues are open to triggering their obligation to buy the Conference League hero, on the condition that he takes a paycut,” the report reads.

“Should terms not be agreed, they’ll have to pay a £5 million penalty fee to send him back.”

As mentioned above, Sancho has played 41 games for Chelsea in all competitions this campaign, although the winger has been limited to 19 starts in the Premier League.

In total, he has four goals and 10 assists – an output that has been praised by former Blues midfielder Joe Cole.

“I think Jadon is a really great player and I think he’s done well,” Cole told TNT Sports. “He’s been rotated in and out a bit but I want to see Jadon playing. You want a player like that in your squad. It will come down to a financial decision I imagine but I really like him.”

Asked whether he had done enough to secure a move, Cole added: “Yes I do. This is a kid who went to Dortmund and was a superstar as a kid. It wasn’t working at Man United but he’s done well, he’s got his career back on track at Chelsea.

“I think there’s more to come from him as well.”

His transfer fee, wages, and reputation complicate the prospect of an easy exit.

That said, INEOS are considering cashing in on him. If they cannot secure a sale, they are expected to bring in a capable replacement for Bayindir, who is set to depart.

One Man Utd player banned from playing against Brentford

The Portuguese coach is expected to rotate his squad, giving young talents like Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, Jaydan Kamason, Bendito Mantato, and Chido Obi an opportunity after they traveled to Spain for United’s 3-0 victory over Athletic Club.

Mazraoui, who played 74 minutes before being substituted for Luke Shaw on Thursday, will not feature in the clash at Brentford, opening up a spot at wing-back.

“So we are going to deal with that and prepare a game against a team that they won today and is in a great moment. And we have always a responsibility to perform. We have always a responsibility to offer the result.

“But in this moment, we have to be clear. Our focus is more on saving players and trying to be competitive. It’s not a good thing to say, but we need to understand the context.”

Amorim confirmed that any player who is at risk of injury will be rotated, despite the huge prize money at stake for each higher position in the Premier League table, with United languishing in 14th.

“The first thing is that the players who are in risk to get injury will not play,” Amorim added. “No matter what. We need to take a risk in [doing] that. And then we are going to assess tomorrow [Friday] and the next day, who are the best players to start the game.

“Then we have to be careful because we are Manchester United and we cannot go to a game without thinking we can win this game. So the process is going to be like that. It’s going to be tough, but we pass so many things this year. It’s one more. Let’s see.”
