Arsenal join Man United in race to sign Zeno Debast

    [ad_1]

Arsenal may have enjoyed one of their most productive transfer windows in recent years, but Mikel Arteta’s push for the Premier League title could see them return to the market in 2025. According to Caught Offside, the Gunners have identified Sporting Lisbon’s Zeno Debast as a target, with scouts monitoring the Belgian centre-back closely.

Arsenal and Man Utd Set for Transfer Battle

Manchester United are also keen on the 21-year-old defender, who was brought to Lisbon by Ruben Amorim. Debast has a £70 million release clause, though both Arsenal and United are expected to test Sporting’s resolve with offers closer to half that figure.

    Why Debast Fits Arsenal’s Style

Debast’s ball progression, passing range, and dominance in the air make him a strong fit for Arteta’s system. However, Arsenal’s defensive depth is already growing. They are obliged to sign Piero Hincapie permanently from Bayer Leverkusen next summer and have already secured Cristhian Mosquera. That may push other priorities higher up the list, such as reinforcing the wings and finding reliable cover for David Raya in goal.

    United Hold an Advantage?

United, on the other hand, have an urgent need for reinforcements at centre-back. With Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof departing, Erik ten Hag is keen to add quality depth. Debast’s ability to play in both a back four and a three-man defence makes him an attractive option. His previous relationship with Amorim could also tilt the scales in United’s favour.

    Aston Villa Lurking, But Unlikely

Aston Villa are also admirers of Debast, but given his hefty price tag, it seems more likely that his future lies with one of the Premier League’s elite sides.

If Sporting are willing to negotiate, the coming months could see a fascinating transfer battle between Arsenal and Manchester United for one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.

  • Paul Parker runs the rule over Senne Lammens, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir – Man United News And Transfer News

Paul Parker runs the rule over Senne Lammens, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Legendary Manchester United defender Paul Parker is happy the club has brought in a new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, even though he would have preferred a more experienced option.

Speaking exclusively to The Peoples Person courtesy of WhichBookie, Parker explained why sending Andre Onana on loan to Trabzonspor is the right decision by INEOS.

    Back to basics

“Getting him out of the club’s a good thing,” he said. “You couldn’t have him around with the new young goalkeeper coming in, because you just don’t know how he was going to be with him.

“I’d rather see out with the old and in with the new, even if it’s only a loan. You want the young lad to come in. He’s 22 years of age. 22 years of age goalkeeper now is not the same as a 22-year-old goalkeeper from 10, 20 years ago. Different mentality.

“I’m hoping this lad is quite strong mentally. Goalkeepers generally grow up very, very quick. But you have to be stupid as well. You have to be stupid to dive at people’s feet!

“I don’t want a good-looking goalkeeper. You want someone who looks like a goalkeeper, with good hands, and presents himself as a goalkeeper. He doesn’t go around talking about keeping passes to the minimum, playing on the edge, passing through the back. No! Save the ball! Catch it!

“When a corner’s coming, don’t allow different coloured shirts to affect your judgment on where the ball’s going to and where it’s coming from. See the ball at all times. That’s what you want. And when you save it, don’t push it back to where it comes from. Try and catch it.

“When you go to punch, try and punch in a manner that you’re not going to take out players and allow VAR to give penalties.”

    Mentality is everything

The former England man said that signing Lammens carries a lot of risk.

“So, I would say this new goalkeeper, he’s number two in Belgium, but …we’ve signed a number one from Turkey, that didn’t work out, did it, really?”

Parker added that he would have rather United had signed Emiliano Martinez or Gianluigi Donnarumma, “because of their coolness, because they both had presence.”

On the other hand, he conceded that “they’ve got somebody who’s hungry, they’ve looked at longevity and gone down that road, which is absolutely perfect. You get a really good young goalkeeper who will have his moments if he’s young, but still you can bounce off the back of them. Somebody who wants to improve.”

    Panic at the Cottage

Parker mentioned the emotion generated in United’s first two Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham and Altay Bayindir’s performance under pressure.

“You need a presence in there who’s got stature. If he is being blocked off, he’s big enough to say a knee in the back ain’t going to hurt too much.

“Just the presence will make a difference rather than what we saw when Arsenal played.

“Fulham put a corner in the box every time and it was frightening. I was commentating on the game. I think people thought I was on a helter skelter. Just the noises that might have been going through the mic every time Fulham and Arsenal got corners!

“There was a panic on there, there was a panic. It was everything, everything was scary. “

Although the 61-year-old said that Martinez or Donnarumma would have brought immediate presence, he noted that either would have been a relatively short-term fix and said he hoped the club were making a similar shrewd investment on a young keeper as they had in the past.

“It was that £600,000 I think Pete[r Schmeichel] was. And look what happened to him. So you really don’t know.

“And Pete, as you know, Pete still is, but was, ambitious. All you hope is that Lammens has got that little bit in him to want to be a Schmeichel, to want to be a Van der Sar as well…he’s got that body shape hasn’t he? That greyhound look.”

“Whereas you look at Onana, he’s a whole box of muscles. No great agility in that way, no movement, just a bundle of muscles. Today’s goalkeepers are lean. Let’s hope he’s mean.”

  • Ruthless INEOS at it again as United agree another late departure for last member of the bomb squad – report

    [ad_1]

Andre Onana might not be the only Manchester United star to be headed to Turkiye before the transfer window slams shut.

As per YS TV reporter Reşat Can Özbudak, Eyüpspor have reached an agreement with Manchester United for the loan transfer of Tyrell Malacia.

The only thing pending is the left-back’s green light. Once it arrives, the lone member of the bomb squad will be packing his bags and heading to the Turkish Super Lig.

“Exclusive: Eyüpspor has reached an agreement with Manchester United for the loan transfer of Tyrell Malacia.

    Malacia off to Turkiye

“The player’s decision is pending!,” the journalist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Dutchman, who has had a terrible time with injuries since his first season in Manchester, had spent the last six months of the 2024/25 campaign out on loan at PSV Eindhoven.

The 26-year-old even won the Eredivisie there, but the league champions chose not to permanently acquire the defender due to his unimpressive displays back at his homeland.

Tyrell Malacia has no future under Amorim, who tried to play him at left wingback on occasions last season, but the former Feyenoord ace struggled big time.

    No future under Amorim

Despite his poor injury record, there has been interest from the likes of Celtic, Porto, Lille, AS Roma and Elche, with a move to Spain collapsing on deadline day.

Turkiye’s transfer window remains open till September 12, and INEOS will be hoping to agree all the formalities by then.

The Netherlands international’s deal is up at the end of the season, so the Red Devils can only earn a fee if Eyüpspor agree to sign him permanently in January.

But at least, INEOS will save a reported £3.9 million on wages (via capology) should the Turkish side agree to pay his full salary. Details should be out soon.

Rio Ferdinand delivers blunt verdict on Andre Onana’s looming Man United exit – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has pulled no punches in his assessment of Andre Onana’s imminent departure.

    Onana set to leave United

Onana’s future was the subject of speculation during the summer transfer window, despite United’s insistence that they were not actively looking to offload him.

However, once the season started, it became apparent that Onana had lost his place in the starting XI to Altay Bayindir, who was named in goal for all three of the club’s Premier League fixtures.

Onana was given a chance to reclaim his spot when he started against Grimsby Town but he failed spectacularly, making mistakes for both goals that the League Two side netted in the first half, while also saving just one of the 13 penalties that were taken in the penalty shootout as United came crashing out of the EFL Cup.

The Cameroonian’s fate was all but sealed after United completed a deadline-day swoop for Senne Lammens.

Turkish side Trabzonspor tabled an offer for Onana, which United accepted. The Red Devils left it up to Onana to make the final decision on his future and after some deliberation, he accepted the terms that were put on the table.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Onana stands to earn far more at Trabzonspor than he did at United, thanks to a hefty signing bonus and performance-related incentives.

The shot-stopper is expected to travel to Turkey on Thursday to officially seal the switch.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ferdinand expressed his satisfaction with the ruthless manner in which United moved Onana out of the club.

    Ferdinand’s take on Onana’s exit

Ferdinand said, “I think [Omar [Berrada], who is running the football operations at the club, I think he’s made the point that they’re not going to have players sitting around that are not worthy of being at the football club anymore.”

“They’re not going to have players that either aren’t good enough, haven’t performed well enough or are not the right people to be at the football club. He’s not going to have them around like bad smells. I think, for far too long, we’ve had at that at the football club.”

“We’ve been forced to keep players because of bad financial situations that the club have put us in with players and we’ve had to keep them here, sit with them and had to suffer some of these players.”

Ferdinand continued, “I think this is a step in the right direction. As happy as I am with the players that are coming in and providing a difference in terms of speed, dynamism, pace and goal threat, I’m as pleased, if not more, with the way they’ve got players out that the club deemed weren’t right to be there.”

“That side of it has been as important, if not more, than the incoming players because I think it sends out a fantastic message and a strong message to the players that are there: you ain’t hanging about here if you ain’t what we want.”

“That’s what it should be like at every club. If you’re not right for the football club, you’ve got to get out. That’s why I’m so strong on it when a player wants to go, he should be able to force and go… I think it should work both ways.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they face cross-town rivals Manchester City at the Etihad.

Romeo Lavia: United had enquired about Chelsea maestro in the summer – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United were left scrambling for midfield cover in the closing stages of the summer window, after it emerged that a move for Carlos Baleba was not feasible.

Ruben Amorim had made it clear to the INEOS hierarchy that the Brighton and Hove Albion star was the perfect fit for his tactical style.

Intermediaries opened contact but in the end, the Seagulls’ valuation meant a move never materialised, with the United co-owners opting to splurge big on improving the attack instead.

The Red Devils then touched base with Conor Gallagher over a loan deal, which Atletico Madrid rejected instantly, while Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart snubbed a late move to Old Trafford.

    Midfielder hunt

Surprisingly, the 20-time English league champions had enquired with Chelsea over the availability of Romeo Lavia (UiF via Football Fancast).

The Belgian is currently sidelined, and has terribly unlucky with injuries since his €62 million move from Southampton to Chelsea back in 2023.

He has missed almost 70 games but Enzo Maresca is clearly a fan, as he refused to sanction the 21-year-old’s exit.

“Manchester United did plenty of work on potential midfield options towards the end of the window, as we know. Speaking to sources, away from the likes of Baleba, Hjulmand and Gallagher – another they did ask about was Lavia.

    Lavia talks

“Lavia is a very interesting option and not one Chelsea thought about letting go am told, but let’s see what happens with him. Andrey Santos has come in now too, things could be different in January.”

However, once he does come back, it will not be easy for him to reclaim a starting berth given the options at Maresca’s disposal, which is why there is a chance of a January departure, even if on an initial loan.

The Peoples Person has relayed United’s plans of trying again for the former Manchester City academy graduate should he regain his fitness. Whether Chelsea will agree to let him join a direct rival remains to be seen.

INEOS’ main priority will obviously be to try and sign Baleba in a record deal in the winter. Hopefully, quality can be added to the squad then.

  • Why deploying Lisandro Martinez in Ruben Amorim’s shaky Man United midfield is a bad idea – Man United News And Transfer News

Why deploying Lisandro Martinez in Ruben Amorim’s shaky Man United midfield is a bad idea – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

If there is one position causing concern among Manchester United fans, it is the midfield, and it is no surprise that they are floating some intriguing ideas to address it.

United enjoyed a decent summer transfer window, no doubt. But it could have been a 10/10 window had INEOS delivered Ruben Amorim the “mobile midfielder” his system craves.

With Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, Amorim has decent options, but the midfield still lacks balance.

    United’s midfield pivot

Fernandes is a guaranteed starter; you want your best player on the pitch. However, finding the ideal partner for the Portuguese Magnifico has proven to be tricky.

Mainoo is viewed as Fernandes’ understudy, while Ugarte is yet to adapt to the Premier League’s intensity. Casemiro, currently the preferred option, no longer possesses the athleticism he once did.

United’s midfield is crying out for a “mobile midfielder” who INEOS failed to deliver, despite a bold pursuit of Carlos Baleba. While this transfer need may be revisited next year, for now, Amorim must look within for solutions.

    Martinez in midfield

Interestingly, as suggestions on how Amorim might restore balance to his midfield have begun to surface, the idea of trialling Lisandro Martinez in midfield is gathering momentum.

Martinez is among United’s most technically gifted players, thanks to his ability with the ball at his feet, his intelligence, and his passing range.

The argument is that if deployed in midfield, the South American has the vision to dictate play, is press-resistant, and can shield the defence with his great defensive attributes, all qualities that should help him thrive in the role.

However, as gifted as he is, it has already been made clear why Martinez cannot be the solution for United’s midfield, especially under Amorim.

Martinez lacks a key ingredient for Amorim’s midfield

Obviously, alongside Fernandes, Amorim wants an athletic midfielder, someone with the legs to “cover huge ground” and fill the space left when the Portuguese Magnifico pushes forward.

Martinez, for all his technical brilliance, lacks that athletic edge which Erik ten Hag flagged long ago.

Speaking to ESPN in 2021, as relayed by Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag said, “Daley Blind does not have the running capacity to play in midfield. And neither does Martinez.”

So, as brilliant as Martinez might be, pairing him with Fernandes would not work; it is a bad idea. The same gaps seen when Casemiro partners with Fernandes would likely reappear, so Martinez would not solve the problem.

It is also worth noting that playing in midfield would require more ground to be covered, more tackles to be made, and more contact to be absorbed than the United number six faces as a left-sided centre-back, thereby raising the risk of recurring injuries.

    Martinez’s resurgence

Expected to return from injury soon after a steady recovery, United fans will hope Martinez picks up from where he left off.

That ACL injury in February came at the worst possible time, just as he was starting to dictate play from United’s LCB, proving his class.

Hopefully, that is where he picks up from. However, realistically, given the severity of his injury, it may take time before he finds his rhythm again.

    Amorim’s midfield dilemma

As for United’s midfield, Amorim must find a way to get the best from what he has because, frankly, he has no other choice at least until the transfer window reopens.

Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir: Man United have decided who they want to offload – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has quite the conundrum to solve when it comes to his goalkeepers.

Andre Onana committed several high-profile errors last season, and that trend has continued this season, with the Cameroonian responsible for the club’s humiliating EFL Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town.

His backup, Altay Bayindir, has also not set the stage alight. The Portuguese tactician turned to the Turk in the Premier League, but he has made mistakes in all three games so far.

Which is why the ex-Sporting CP boss pushed for a new goalkeeper with INEOS landing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Both goalies have not covered themselves in glory

Emiliano Martinez was left heartbroken as his move collapsed on deadline day due to Jadon Sancho’s unwillingness to move to Aston Villa permanently.

Now with the Belgian onboard, the 20-time English league champions have four senior goalkeepers, and something has to give.

Tom Heaton, who signed a new deal in the summer, is unlikely to leave, having been made a member of the leadership group within the squad, with many players feeling he is good enough to replace either Onana or Bayindir.

There have been reports stating INEOS are looking to offload both goalies, with the Cameroon international attracting interest from both Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, with the ex-Fenerbahce ace could head back to his homeland.

But Teamtalk have now revealed that United would prefer to offload Andre Onana instead, and it makes a lot of sense. He is the higher earner, and is on the hunt for a new contract, something he is unlikely to receive at Old Trafford.

    Onana to be cut loose

“United are listening to offers for BOTH Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

“However, they are only expected to green-light the exit of one of them, given new signing Senne Lammens, from Royal Antwerp, will take over from the other, either as the starter or the second choice.

“TEAMtalk is aware that Onana is indeed going to be cut loose if United can find a club to take him. Sources have stated they are more than willing to part ways with the former Inter Milan goalkeeper.”

He will also depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, and Amorim would prefer to not lose too many stars at that crucial juncture of the season.

Man United target Aleksandar Mitrovic finds himself surprising new home – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United’s search for a new striker in the summer had taken them far and wide, with the club even looking at the Saudi Pro League for options.

Rasmus Hojlund was deemed not good enough, with Ruben Amorim disappointed with the Dane’s four Premier League goals last term.

Jason Wilcox pushed hard for Liam Delap, but the ex-Ipswich Town striker chose Chelsea instead.

With Viktor Gyokeres refusing a reunion with Amorim in favour of Arsenal, and Victor Osimhen’s wage demands pricing United out of the race, INEOS were left scrambling for quality on the market.

    Striker search

One of the surprising names on the club’s radar was Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has been on fire for Al-Hilal since joining in 2023 from Fulham.

The Serbian netted 28 times from 31 starts across all competitions last season, while also registering seven assists.

The fact that he was Premier League proven, having scored 38 times in the English top-flight for Fulham and Newcastle was what attracted INEOS towards him in the first place.

With Al-Hilal open to letting the 30-year-old leave, United had sensed an opportunity for a low-cost deal. They eventually recalibrated their plans and opted to sign Benjamin Sesko instead.

    Mitrovic finds new home

And now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the “unbelievable” Serbia international has joined Qatari side Al-Rayyan after his contract in Saudi Arabia was terminated.

“Al-Rayyan agree deal to sign Aleksandar Mitrović from Al Hilal, here we go!

“Permanent move as Mitrović contract has been terminated, ready for new chapter in Qatar,” Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

United have certainly done the right thing by overlooking Aleksandar Mitrović, who would have been a short-term solution at best, in favour of signing Sesko.

Hopefully, the Slovenian can start banging in the goals soon to ease the pressure on his head coach.

Shea Lacey tipped for the top provided he stays fit – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

Manchester United’s academy pipeline keeps talents ready to step up for the first team, something Ruben Amorim has taken advantage of last season.

The Portuguese handed debuts to Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, and Chido Obi. And more such wonderkids are waiting in line to impress.

All the recent headlines have been rightfully won by 14-year-old JJ Gabriel, who has been in red-hot form for the U18s, with the first team head coach calling him up for first team training this season.

A few seasons ago, the same level of hype was created by Shea Lacey, who was tipped to be the next superstar talent off the Carrington production line.

    Lacey’s fitness record

Amorim chose to take him to Asia for the pre-season tour with the 18-year-old impressing against the ASEAN All Stars.

However, injuries have not been kind to the England U17 international, with Shea Lacey suffering a multitude of injuries which have robbed him off the chance to impress on a consistent basis.

He returned from injury in the recent U21 Manchester derby and made an instant impact, setting up Amir Ibragimov’s winner after good work down the right.

U21s boss Travis Binnion tried to downplay expectations, asking for patience from fans and media. He also explained that the main thing holding back the Carrington graduate at the moment is his own fitness record.

    U21 boss calls for patience

“Everybody in the world knows about Shea Lacey,” Binnion was quoted as saying by The BBC.

“He needs to be patient with himself and everyone else needs to be patient with him because there is still loads to come tactically, physically and mentally.

“We are still managing him physically. If he can stay on the pitch and stay training, everyone thinks he could be a top player.”

He has seven goals and as many assists for the U18s from only 17 starts, which shows what a talent the club have on their hands.

Romeo Lavia emerges as January midfield target for Man United – Man United News And Transfer News

    [ad_1]

The summer transfer window came and went, but Manchester United failed to address their glaring need for a ball-winning midfielder.

Casemiro does not possess the legs to play every week, while Manuel Ugarte’s regression has been shocking to view.

Surprisingly, Ruben Amorim does not feel Kobbie Mainoo has the engine to play as the deep-lying playmaker, and hence, the head coach has opted to use a pivot of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes thus far.

However, he is aware of the need to improve, which is why he demanded INEOS to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion.

    Midfielder hunt failed

However, the Seagulls’ valuation meant a move never materialised, but the Red Devils are expected to go back for him either in January or next summer.

However, this time the Old Trafford side will not keep all their eggs in one basket, with Miguel Delaney of The Independent claiming that Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia has emerged as a surprise option to come in and eventually replace Casemiro.

“The end of the window of course means the start of speculation for January, mostly due to the business that didn’t get done.

“Manchester United still want a midfielder. Expect United to go back in for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, although some insiders have wondered whether a deal could be done for Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia,” the journalist wrote.

The Belgian has endured a terrible time since his €62 million move from Southampton to Chelsea back in 2023, missing almost 70 games due to a variety of injuries.

Romeo Lavia has emerged as an option

However, his footballing upbringing at Manchester City’s academy means he is good with the ball at his feet while also being equally competent out of possession.

As per Fbref, he ranked in the 96th percentile for passes completed, and in the 92nd percentile for take-ons completed among his midfield peers across Europe, which shows how press-resistant he can be.

The Belgium international was also in the 92nd percentile for interceptions and being only 21, he will only improve with time and he already knows what it takes to excel in the Premier League.

His injury record does need to improve, but he will cost a lot less than Baleba, who remains the top option and rightly so.

It will be interesting to see which player INEOS targets in the January window. Based off of the team’s start this season, Ruben Amorim needs all the help he can get.
